Rio Negro in the Amazon

Duranglers has had the unique opportunity of traveling to the Rio Negro in Brazil, which is the largest of the Amazon tributaries. In the vastness of the Amazon rain forest we were introduced to an incredible variety of fish that readily hammered large streamers and exploded on surface poppers more aggressively than other fish that we have previously encountered. The most aggressive of these and the primary quarry were fish locally know as Tucunare and most commonly called Peacock Bass. The fish technically are in the Family of Ciclids, you know like the tropical fish Oscars, with one major difference that they grow in excess of 20 pounds. There are four distinctive species of Peacock Bass that exhibit different spot patterns, size and preferred habitat, but all have to be considered some of the most beautiful fish anywhere with an attitude that is just down right mean and nasty.

Combine these awesome game fish with the incredible Amazon rain forest, which is unmatched in diversity of flora and fauna and the stage is set for an outstanding fly fishing adventure. The trip was such as success that Tom Knopick of Duranglers regularly hosts groups of fly fisherman back to the jungles of Brazil. Please contact Tom for questions and information.

The daily schedule and weekly itinerary can be changed to accommodate fishing conditions or the desires of the anglers.
