This past week, I was fortunate enough to fill a spot for four and a half days on John’s tarpon dates in the Florida Keys with master guide Bus Bergmann. This was a very last minute opportunity (maybe even a once in a lifetime), so I went for it. Knowing very little about saltwater fly fishing and next to nothing about tarpon, I kept a journal my thoughts surrounding these fish. I may not believe it happened if it wasn’t for these photos and journal entries.
For the next few days, I will post these Tarpon Diaries.
Tarpon Diaries, Day 1 – Planes Trains and Automobiles
A random happenstance and a spot opened on the boat for 5 days. A quick decision on my part followed by a full day of travel on planes, trains, and automobiles. We have been traveling from dawn until dusk.
Now sitting in a VRBO home in Marathon Florida, we are rigging rods, tying leaders, and talking tarpon.
John is telling me tarpon have broken the greatest and most famous of trout fly anglers. I am told they may break me.
Tomorrow is my first real day of fly fishing in saltwater, for any species. Ever. Colorado snowboarders always say go big or go home.
