Perhaps this week’s version of 2 flies could be considered the “low hanging fruit” of flies. Some might even call it “junk”, flies for simpletons. Whatever. We are catching fish.
Annelids
Annelids. Really, do we need to say much more about Annelids?
…ok, yes we do, and perhaps a little more context. So the San Juan has been living La Vida Mocha the past month. Our low elevation snowmelt (along with dam work) has been really messing with the clarity of the San Juan and the fishing was suffering. Thankfully, we are on the upswing of clarity as well as fish catch rates and of course the ole Annelid is leading the charge in fish counts. What’s better, you could even fish a size 10 Annelid, and they would eat it. Don’t fear going bigger though, as a size 18 is doing just as well. Fish em in red, orange, wine, purple, and pink.
Simi Seal Leech
Along the lines of flies called “junk”, the Simi Seal leech walks the line. It isn’t actually junk, but some people label it as such because it: a. isn’t an insect and b. works so well. It can also be fish as a streamer or a nymph…
We tie these things in every shade, but black, olive, blood, and white work great. Tie them with your favorite seal dubbing and fish it under an indicator on the Juan (with an annelid), under a sink tip with a slow strip on Vallecito or Nighthorse, or on the slow swing on any of our local (clearer) rivers. It’s working well.
