Gear:
Permit: 8-10WT
Tarpon: 9-12 WT (definitely bring something bigger than 9WT to tackle the 100+ pound fish, the most comfortable would be a 12wt.)
Leader: We like to fish tippet of 60-80LB for the largest fish. For Permit 15-20lb.
Fly Line: We recommend floating and intermediate lines. If you have both, great, if not, we will have a few rods spun up with both that we will provide.
Flies: For tarpon, we recommend natural and black/purple baitfish and toads (1/0-3/0). We recommend a mix of flats crabs (olive), and strong arms (olive) for the permit. We will also have a comprehensive selection of flies at the lodge if anyone finds their patterns insufficient. Our guides will also each have a box on the boat! Please do not go overboard on tying permit flies, as they can be very selective. Guides will have 1 or two patterns that they know are working well at the moment.
Clothing/Shoes: Please bring a good waterproof jacket, long-sleeve fishing shirt, protective pants (or shorts), and A SOLID PAIR OF WADING BOOTS. Many of our permit flats are very rocks/reefy but provide great opportunities to attack permits on foot. We will encourage guests to wade on a number of our permit flats, and protective wading boots are a must to complete this safely.

Fishing:
Getting To The Spot: Each day begins with you and your guide trailering the skiffs to the town ramp, taking about 20-40 minutes on quiet rural roads. NNL fishes from a variety of different towns along the southern shores of Puerto Rico, where the skiffs will be launched from a boat ramp. The average travel time in the skiff to start fishing is 5-15 minutes, depending on the target species.
Tarpon Fishing: These fish are aggressive and mostly in gin clear water. Unlike many tarpon fishing locations in the states, these fish are less “spooky” when it comes to fly placement. Guests typically enjoy catching 15-40 pound fish on gurglers in the morning, and hunting larger cruising fish on classic tarpon patterns throughout the day. The island has endless habitat and the tarpon have seen very few flies. In addition, the variety of fishing zones allows anglers to fish the most productive areas depending on seasons, weather conditions, and tidal movement.
Permit Fishing: Unlike the Tarpon of Puerto Rico, these Permit still act like Permit! Let’s be honest they are A**holes, but we keep on coming back for more. Majestic views of the reef and plenty of tails paint the picture of permit fishing in PR.
The fishing takes place on a series of pancake-style flats that act as the barrier reef to southern Puerto Rico. Depending on the tides and conditions, tailing permit will be targeted on foot or from the skiff’s bow. Unlike other permit fisheries, walking on rocks and turtle grass and hunting for big sickle tails out of the water in Puerto Rico is truly unique. While not receiving the same level of pressure as other Caribbean destinations, these fish are still difficult to feed!
Boats and Equipment: No Name Lodge utilizes five 17-foot Maverick skiffs with four-stroke 90 HP engines. All boats are equally equipped with poling platforms, carbon push poles, Yeti coolers, and all gear you may need; unlike some tropical destinations, there will be no disparity between boats, gear, and guides on your trip. Each guide is a certified captain by the US Coastguard and will be operating their skiffs professionally as a result. The guides have spare terminal tackle, outfits, and flies. If you will be traveling with no rods, please notify the lodge beforehand to ensure loaner gear is available.
On-land transportation is handled by a fleet of Toyota Tacomas with Mitsubishi Montero’s used as support/backup vehicles. We promise you will love the rugged style and utility these vehicles have to offer.
To ensure all guests get the full experience, we are equipped with backup boats, trucks, rods, push poles, etc., to circumvent any obstacle the elements throw at us.
Location:
Cabo Rojo: Located on Puerto Ricos West coast, Boquerón & La Parguera are small fishing towns directly on the water surrounded by authentic Puerto Rican restaurants and happening downtown bars. Cheap drinks, good food, and plenty of fantastic vibes. Although rustic and very “small Caribbean island” feeling, Boquerón & La Parguera are only 30 minutes away from Mayaguez, providing guests access to hospital care, pharmacies, and many big box stores. Guests can rest easy knowing that any forgotten prescription or gear can be replaced quickly and easily. Just ask your guide!
Our current locations are in Salinas and Boqueron, both a short 5-minute walk from the happening local downtown strip. Feel free to explore the sights and bars on your own; self-exploration, pop-up style flexibility, and adventure are some of the aspects that set No Name Lodge apart from other fishing lodges.
Testimonial:
“Our group of six experienced Tarpon anglers spent a week fly fishing with No Name Lodge in Puerto Rico in May 2024. We all agreed, that this was the best Tarpon fishing we have ever had.
Our group has fished together for a number of years in a never ending quest of searching for the “best” Tarpon fishing from Campeche to Cuba. Without a doubt, Puerto Rico is now at the top of our list. In fact, we have re-booked our return trip to No Name Lodge in 2025. Puerto Rico is a “target rich environment” where we sighted fished to large pods of rolling fish, and in some areas to 100# Tarpon.
Cooper and his team took great care of us and I highly recommend No Name Lodge.”
