The Animas is a free flowing River and conditions can vary dramatically in the spring. There will be times it is in great shape and times when it is unfishable. With warmer weather the snow starts to melt then with a cold snap the river will come right back in.
As of today the conditions are good on the Animas. Five days ago the river was high and dirty with flows over 700 cfs but with cooler weather flows have dropped down to 480 cfs. Clarity is good and the river is very fishable. Consider indicator fishing with basic nymphs but if you like to through streamers this is a great time.
Expect this rollercoaster ride for the rest of April but sometime in early May the main runoff with begin.
