Silverton Mining Clean Up – Superfund and Good Samaritan Legislation
If you have been following the mine clean up efforts in Silverton, this is a good updated review. The efforts of 5 Rivers Trout Unlimited and the Animas Rivers Stakeholders Group to clean up the upper Animas should be noted and appreciated by all La Plata County locals.
Andy manages Duranglers Flies and Supplies online store and web content. When he is not plugging away in the basement of Duranglers, he can be found in the shop talking weird flies, throwing spey casts for few fish, eating pizza, drinking coffee, painting, and raising a family in Southwest Colorado.
His fly fishing writings have been published on blogs such as the Daily Drake and Simms Wading Room.
I am an out of state trout fisherman that has enjoyed the Animas river. What can I do to help you recover from the catastrophic spill. Is there a “friends of the Animas” organization? Can you post any representatives addresses that I can contact to help bring the situation to light. I believe we should be able to restore the Animas with the goal of sustaining trout all the way to Silverton.
Thanks very much John, we really appreciate it! We are still waiting for news on the effects of the incident and hoping for the best. In the meantime, we are also trying to put together some ways people can help. I will probably have a blog post later today with all the information that we have a this point.
Again, we really appreciate your concern John, take care.
Mining companies don’t like to invest in Superfund sites because they’re heavily scrutinized and more costly to develop, said Ernest Kuhlman, a San Juan County commissioner and Silverton’s former mayor. How many people want to go to a Superfund site for tourism or recreation?
I can’t imagine a toxic plume coming out of Silverton shown all across national news is that good for tourism either Margarito. The real question is how has the superfund affected Leadville, CO and their tourism or recreation?
