Rio de las Animas Perdidas – The River of Lost Souls
Sometimes, while fishing the Animas River things can feel a little surreal, especially when one comes across strange river booty, such as this carnation.
The whole of the Four Corners region is filled with Spanish names that follow the theme of death and the afterlife. Purgatory, river of lost souls, etc. These came from Spanish explorer Juan Maria Antonio Rivera. It’s not that he saw a lot of ghosts though, it’s because he didn’t find any gold and thought it “dead”.
