Animas Lunch Report – Mocha Latte – 3/17/15
“What if we did a daily lunch report of the Animas?” Kyle stated to me this afternoon. “Like, every day or so we write a quick report on the Animas after checking it out at lunch.”
“Hmm, that is a great idea Kyle. Way to promote office synergy with that brainstorm! Homerun!” I replied back.
We then high fived and discussed the details around the office water cooler. We also talked weather and sports.
As often as we can, we are going to do a little lunch report of the Animas (since Duranglers sits 2 blocks away and all). So let us commence with the first of many Animas Lunch Reports. Since I just got back from fishing the Animas on lunch, looks like I am up first with the first report.
Andy – “I fished the Animas on lunch and the river looked like this:
The water is fairly off color and rising. I didn’t take a photo so this Mocha Latte is the best I could do to convey the river consistency. Currently at around 500 cfs, the name of the game was big dark bugs. I swung some black and brown streamers with the Redington Dually 5 wt switch. No grabs. The water is really cold from the low elevation snowmelt. With the warmer weather, the water looks like it will continue to rise. Lightner creek is still spewing out some clay colored crud and there is currently work being done at smelter rapids. A lot going against the visibility on the Animas today. Hopefully in the next few days we will see the flows level out and the fishing to pick up.
If you get out, use big dark flies. Streamers and large nymphs will be the bug of choice. Don’t be discouraged if you don’t catch any fish; the Animas is a tough river and the addition of off-color water makes it worse. Go to Starbucks and get yourself a mocha to help you feel better should you get skunked. Oh, and keep an eye out for BWOs should the water subside a little.”
