Animas Lunch Report – 5/23/16 – Sunbathing Pike
They say that if you can find a laid up pike who is warming in the spring sun, a good cast often illicits a the best visual eat of the year. You can often get these fish to eat topwater on poppers, sliders, and divers.
At least that’s what they say. This guy didn’t seem too interested in eating. He was probably full of delicious bass and bluegill already. Maybe next time.
In other news, the Animas is rising at 3310 cfs currently. The San Juan has reached 5000 cfs…however you should note, it is fishing incredible with eggs, worms, annelids, leeches, etc. These high flows on the Juan have discouraged a lot of anglers, but they shouldn’t. There are still tons of floating and wading options and lots of fish are being caught.
The pike bite is prime right now as well on our local reservoirs. Just make sure to cast to fish who will eat…unlike this guy above.
