Animas Lunch Report – 1/25/15 – Forget the Forecast
It has been cold. Nights in the single digits, ice on the river, witch’s mammary-kind of cold. It has dissuaded a lot of people from getting out on the water, and for good reason. The trout have not been particularly cooperative as of late on the Animas. The cold has just been solidifying our snowpack, so it is a good thing. Cabin fever just sets in this time of year.
The San Juan is another story though, it has been on fire…but I digress.
HOWEVER…we saw this weekend warm up just at touch. Temps climbed above freezing, and we saw a little more fish activity. In fact, we have had reports of fish being caught all over the Animas this weekend. They didn’t come easy, and the angler’s game had to be on point, but they are eating. Nymphs rigs and streamers fished dead drift are making the grade. I was even able to pull in a small brown between suckers on Sunday (more on that later).
The point is, fishing is picking up. Make sure you get out your split shot. Oh, and Duranglers guide Rob Coddington made this happen this past Saturday. They are out there, you better get your game face on.
