Animas Lunch Report 3/20/14 – Fresh 2 Death
Hey guess what! We just got these really legit 5280 Duranglers Flatbrim Snapbacks in the shop. Fresh 2 Death son!
Kyle – BIG streamers… not many bugs moving around from what I saw. Great time to walk the bank and plop in big weighty flies. Floating line streamer fishing. But don’t expect much action.
Andy – It rained a little last night and this morning, and it looks like it possibly snowed up high too. We needed it, the Animas was getting to wily this early in the game it needed to take a break. The colder front dropped the flows to about 560 cfs today, and they are still dropping.
Protip: My best days on the Animas are in the spring when we hit a downslope in flows. As in, today and into the weekend (should the cooler weather persist). Watch the flows; if it keeps dropping, fishing could get real awesome. I am talking BWOs and big fish rising. Although it is the Animas, so you never quite know what it will throw at you. Oh, and Lightner is still chugging muck plus the work being done at smelter and high bridge are adding to the discoloration. If you are an expert oarsman, you may want to think about a weekend float. Big stonefly nymphs or streamers fished almost dead drift on the bottom may find you a trout or two. Here are a few recent shots.
