Animas Lunch Report – 4/29/15 – San Juan River
For better or worse, we are seeing some changes around here. Warmer weather, higher flows, more activity in the fly shop, and fish switching tactics on us. Summer is on it’s way. With the current weather, the Animas may have a few more days before clarity and flows make catching difficult. We could be seeing the beginnings of runoff. The Animas is currently at 502 cfs and rising. It looks like we will be heading down to the San Juan for a little bit.
Les – On the Animas? Prince nymph of course!
Andy – The Animas may be in for a few days, but look for flows to increase and catching to decrease with the warmer weather.
Buck and I were able to take a field trip to San Juan River this morning for an IDTV spot and a little fishing. The flows on the San Juan have been recently been increased to 616 and the water clarity is good. Fishing picked up at 11am and only got better throughout the afternoon. Annelids were the key until the trout keyed in on emerging midges in the afternoon. With the increased flows, fish have moved into a wider variety of water, which means more opportunities to get away from other anglers.
If you have never fished the San Juan River, make sure to check out our San Juan River Beginner’s Guide.
San Juan Protip: Take off your indicator.
Does Buck have nothing else to do but fish? Thank heavens some of us have to work to keep up the average.
Of course Buck has other things to do besides fish. He has to go on his 6 week New Zealand road trip, organize TU events, and work in the shop on Sundays.
