Animas Lunch Report – 7/13/15 – Monday Funday
Ahh Monday Funday. Another day back to the weekly grind.
Smash your desk, go fishing.
The problems of Monday are already piling up and nothing seems to be going the way we want it too. All I am thinking about is the caddis hatch that is currently plaguing the Animas river. It’s just sickening to think that I am trapped here in the basement while the sun is shining and trout are rising all over this blasted (blessed) piece of La Plata County.
Oh well, it could be worse I am sure.
Trout sickeness is infecting even the best of us fly shop employees right now. It seems that we are only getting reports of how awesome everything is fishing right now. Heck even when it is bad it is good. Check out this little report from David Grey:
[blockquote author=”David Grey”]Hey there, I thought you guys might want to have a few pictures of an unfishable day at Texas hole. I was there when the storm rolled in and it went from rain to hard rain to hail to hard hail in about 3 minutes. The rock arroyos on both sides of the river all ran with water/mud falls coming over the cliffs. Pretty cool! Then the river turned and looked as turbid the Mississippi. [/blockquote]
All around Duranglers country, the report usually goes something like this:
“The fishing was really good before the rain picked up”
This has been true of the Animas, San Juan, Piedra, Dolores, and many high mountain creeks. So if you plan to get out during this monsoon season, get out early or get out late.
Andy – The Animas saw some great fishing yesterday…before the afternoon rains blew it out. Today the water was fairly off color at around 1800 cfs. Most of our local rivers bumped up some due to the rain but they should be clearing up in a day or so. Throw bigger bugs with the off color water…but do not discount dry fly fishing right now. It seems the big boys have picked up on the great hatches going on and have been keying in on dries all throughout the river.
Oh, and we recently got a whole pile of Patagonia Fitz Roy Trout stickers in the shop. You know, if you are a sticker type person.
