Animas Lunch Report – 8/25/15 – It’s Shocking
I will give you the bad news first: fishing on the Animas probably won’t be great this week. The DOW has been and will be shocking the Animas River for the next few days through town to gauge the fish count. This fish count has been demanded by many people after the Gold King mine spill.
The good news: while the official data is not out, fish counts are looking good. Kyle and I had the chance to watch the fish shocking operation and talk a little bit with Jim White about the Animas. In the count are a good amount of large browns, including a few in the 3 to 7 pound range.
Andy – I was able to fish for a few minutes ahead of the shocking boat and managed a few fish on dries. If you do get out and find some feeding fish, a hopper dropper set up with a size 16-18 Copper John, Prince Nymph, or Two Bit Hooker are a good rig. Most of my fish were taken on a 14 Dry Muddler skittered and dead drifted. Mornings and evenings are a good bet for streamers.
The Animas will come back better than ever.
Coming up your way in mid Sept. Hoping the Animas will be OK.
Tom, so far it is holding out very well. September is usually a great time to be on the Animas.
