Animas Lunch Report – 9/25/15 – Bullwinkle
I have been out of the shop for about a week now (trip back to the midwest to visit family), and today was my first day back. I should have known it was going to be an interesting day when my commute involved an Animas River moose sighting. Moose are fairly rare in Colorado, and even more rare around these parts. So when Bullwinkle makes an appearance anywhere (let alone in town), people get excited. I will take it as a good omen for the Animas and for fall fishing.
Per usual, the Animas is fishing exceptionally well this fall so far. BWO hatches are still going strong, and since we have not seen our first frost: hoppers! A hopper with a BWO emerger dropper has been crushing fish midday to emerger eaters. If you are not seeing rising fish, nymph deep with small mayfly nymphs and emergers. The mornings are also seeing good fish caught on streamers.
And I did get a moment to make a few casts out east at a friends wedding. They had a hot air balloon ride scheduled for the bride and groom after the ceremony, before the reception. So I had an hour to kill. Can’t complain about midwest topwater bass eats.
