Animas Lunch Report – 9/29/15 – Fall Colors
Now, and I mean right now is the time for Fall colors in Southwest Colorado. Drop what you are doing, get your gear, jump in your car, and get to your favorite piece of water. The fall colors are popping and there is no better time to view them.
You may even see some great views of trees and foliage on your way to the river.
The Animas is currently flowing steady at 219 cfs and is fishing good. We are seeing sporadic hatches of brown mayflies in sized 12-14, which is interesting. There is some debate among us here in the shop as to what kind of mayflies these actually are. BWOs are also coming off in good numbers and trout are keying in on emergers.
Mornings and evenings are a good time to get out and throw streamers. Some of us here at the shop have developed a fall spey mentality and can be found swing streamers and wet flies on the Animas. Stop in the shop and ask Rob or myself about two handers for trout.
If nothing else, you should at least check out the Soft Hackle Streamer and consider tying up a few to swing. These flies can be swung on two-handers, but they work just as good when fished with a single handed rod on the swing with a few twitches thrown in.
You may also want to consider throwing streamers on the San Juan River. Reports are coming back that large attractors and hoppers are catching lots of fish too…
