Animas Lunch Report – 6/15/15 – Summer Bugs
Is your dry fly box ready for the onslaught that is about to happen?
Ok, so I know that the Animas is flowing at about 4,500 cfs and everything else seems completely blown out, but just hear me out for a second. The flows are up mostly in part to the recent rains (maybe a little snow melt too), but we should see them drop considerably in the next few days (pending more rain that is). Once the flows drop, the water warms a tiny bit, and a foot or two of clarity returns; it’s game on.
Expect bugs of all sized and shapes to show up very soon. You better have a little bit of everything in your dry box because a little bit of everything is going to come off our local rivers. Salmonflies, black and golden stones, yellow sallies, PMDs (pictured below), caddis, green and gray drakes, and later on: tricos. They are all going to come off en-masse.
Hit the vise, stop in the shop, or check out our dries online and get that box ready. You don’t want to be caught without.

Andy – So rumor has it that during the Animas River days, two drift boats were sunk on the Animas. These are unconfirmed rumors and no one was hurt (thank goodness); but if you are thinking about floating soon, make sure you know what you are doing. There were also two people rescued from a flipped raft last week during high water. Don’t be that guy, be smart and stay alive. If you are unsure, just don’t float it.
The Animas is still blown out thanks to a lot of rain last night. Should we see some dry days, the river will clear up pretty quick. Get ready, it’s going to get really awesome really fast.
