Animas Lunch Report – 3/11/16 – It’s Not Runoff
You may have noticed the water in the Animas looks like it is in the throes of spring runoff. It is true, there is a little snow melt going on that is causing a very slight discoloration in the river. Usually, because of this, fishing is actually pretty good in March.
However, the water has not had a slight discoloration lately. It has held a mocha latte color throughout the day. The flows are only at about 360cfs; so if it isn’t runoff, then what is it? Well it happens to be the the City of Durango, doing some very heavy work on a waterline at 29th. They have had up to 3 heavy machines in the river at any given time throughout the week causing a great amount of sediment to discolor the river. When will this be completed? Who knows, ask the city.
Your best bet is to fish really early before the muck up begins, upriver of 29th, or on the weekends when they are not hard at work.
Dark streamers and baetis are what’s up right now though.
