Andy manages Duranglers Flies and Supplies online store and web content. When he is not plugging away in the basement of Duranglers, he can be found in the shop talking weird flies, throwing spey casts for few fish, eating pizza, drinking coffee, painting, and raising a family in Southwest Colorado.
His fly fishing writings have been published on blogs such as the Daily Drake and Simms Wading Room.
Animas Lunch Report – 11/9/16 – Post-Election Hangover Cure Did last night’s election not turn out how you wanted? Or perhaps you are feeling the effects of a celebration party gone awry. Either way, you may be suffering the effects of a “Post-Election Hangover”. You know what will cure that right up? Probably water, or coffee,…
Duranglers Spey Clinic Recap This past Saturday saw our first ever Beginner’s Spey Clinic take place in Durango on the banks of our local Animas River. Attendance was better than expected (why not, it was a free event) and we were able to put a good number of spey and switch rods in everyone’s hands.…
New Additions to the Fly Tying Arsenal Here at the shop when it comes to flies, many people tend to lean towards the side of tradition. Even though we bring in new fly patterns every year, I bet you can guess which flies sell the most. The standards of course: Parachute Adams, Prince Nymphs, and…
Fall Simms Sale This is one of those things where we would say “act quick” or “while supplies last” or “run don’t walk”…but those are all cliche and overused idioms. Instead, we will just say: “We have Headwaters Gore-Tex waders on sale, our stock is running out quick”. Along with Headwaters waders, we also have…
Animas Lunch Report – 10/14/16 – The Swing of Fall It’s been nice out lately. Really nice. Almost t-shirt weather. It has been a great reprieve from the rains from a few weeks ago. This warmer fall weather has brought about some welcome sights on the Animas river in the past week. Namely, tricos, BWOs,…

The Season of Meat – October Fly Fishing Report It’s meat season around here. Ducks, elk, deer, pheasants, antelope, and bear. Many of us are prepping to get out after that wild game meat. Sometimes what you put in the freezer in October will be feeding your family in May. While you may not be…
Trout Spey: Redington’s New Find Your Water Redington just dropped their newest Find Your Water episode, and it is safe to say that it got Rob and I little excited about the trout spey action. It pumped us up because this time of year, we become a little obsessive about swinging two handers for trout. We…
Duranglers in the News! Found in the Wichita Eagle to be exact. Check out the recent Outdoor piece written on our shop owners Tom and John straight out of Kansas…John and Tom’s home state! READ IT HERE

Animas Lunch Report – 9/19/16 – Summer, where did you go? With a heavy heart, we must relinquish the summer of 2016 to the annals of history. It has been one for the books, really it has. Full on flushing flows on the San Juan River which we have not seen for about 6 or…
Animas Lunch Report – 9/15/16 – San Juan After Party The Sportsman is the go-to for the after party: but the Ranch is often our final destination. Sometimes it can be the Billy Goat if we are in it for the long haul. Perhaps Sidekicks if one is truly desperate. Tonight, it’s the Balcony in…
Animas Lunch Report – 9/14/16 – Swung Lunch When September rolls around, and there is a crisp bite to the morning air; I start to dream of chrome on the swing. Being one with few funds to travel to the PNW, I often settle for the local two-hander scene on the Animas River. This scene usually…
Animas Lunch Report – 9/9/16 – Time Keeps On Slipping, Slipping… It’s weird how fast things slip past us. Like summer. Where the heck did summer go? I thought we just fishing stonefly hatches on the Rio Grande 6 minutes ago. Now it’s all “fall this”, and “changing leaves that”, and “where did my life…
Animas Lunch Report – 9/5/16 – Day of Labors Hoppers, cased caddis, Tricos, and a few BWOs. Floatable at 520 cfs and a beautiful 80 degree day. On this Day of Labors, the Animas isn’t a bad place to be. Heck, the Piedra, Pine, Dolores, San Juan, and high mountain creeks are not a bad place…
Redington Find Your Water: Alpine Rises The new Redington Find Your Water episode has dropped. Aptly named “Alpine Rises”, this video contains some beautiful shots of the Rocky Mountain backcountry, high mountain cutthroat trout, and our shop friends Ben and Anna fishing dry flies to their heart’s content. What is not mentioned is that this…
Animas Lunch Report – 8/25/15 – This is Why We Fly Growing up in Iowa, there were few opportunities to catch trout on a fly rod. Even at the age of 11, fly fishing and fly tying was an intense pastime of mine and remains to this day (my mother might call it a “passion”…
Onset of the Hopper Hoards – August/September Fly Fishing Report The onset of hopper hoards have marked the coming of our late summer fishing season. If you are one who likes violent, splashy dry fly eats and feisty fish; then this just might be when you want to get on the water. We are in…
Animas Lunch Report – 8/5/15 – Monsoonal Baked neck, dark and dry hands, and drinking “enough” an unattainable feat; our summer guide season had been grinding on through the heat of late July. It had been dry for nearly a month and 90+ degree days mixed with no cloud cover and low water had made…
Duranglers Sage X Fly Rod Review So here is where I am at: the Sage Z-Axis (for me) is the rod by which all other Sage rods are measured. The Z-Axis 9′ 5 weight was the first high end rod I ever owned; which I still fish to this day. It is not an “old”…
The Season of Wet Wading The height of fishing season in the Rocky Mountains, like most locales, falls in the summer. With summer temps comes a disdain for donning the full kit of waders and boots on the water; it’s far to hot out. This is one of the best times to be on the…
Animas Lunch Report – 7/20/16 – Photos From Afield 1000 words. That’s what they say a picture is worth anyway. Sometimes its better to show a fishing report than it is to explain it…
