His fly fishing writings have been published on blogs such as the Daily Drake and Simms Wading Room.
Animas Lunch Report – 8/12/15 – Before and After – It’s Complex So yesterday, we sent out a before and after photo of the Animas. For the most part, the response was very positive (we saw more shares of this post than any others in Duranglers history of using social media). But a few people…
Animas Lunch Report – 8/11/15 –2015 Dos Mosca Recap With most of the past week’s talk focused on the Animas this past week, we didn’t want to gloss over our yearly fly fishing tournament benefiting the local chapter of Big Brothers, Big Sisters. For those that don’t know, Dos Mosca of course means “2 fly”.…
Duranglers July Monthly Report – Terrestrial Time Admit it; there is no feeling quite like tying on a giant, gaudy, brightly colored, foam and deer hair covered monstrosity. Any fish that would eat such a fly is worth the pursuit. August marks the beginning of terrestrial time on the majority of Colorado waters, and the…
Silverton Mining Clean Up – Superfund and Good Samaritan Legislation If you have been following the mine clean up efforts in Silverton, this is a good updated review. The efforts of 5 Rivers Trout Unlimited and the Animas Rivers Stakeholders Group to clean up the upper Animas should be noted and appreciated by all La…
Soft Hackle Saturday – Barr’s Graphic Caddis Listen to elitist self, thinking “that ain’t no soft hackle”. You are stuck in the past brah, welcome to the 21st century: where fly anglers swing nymphs and skitter dries. Joking aside, I challenge you to swing Barr’s Graphic Caddis like a wet fly during the summer caddis…
Animas Lunch Report – 7/31/15 – The Heat is On With the dropping flows and increasing temps, the heat is on. Midday, the Animas the water has been rising above 65 degrees and the fishing is turning off. Please attempt to avoid fishing in the hottest parts of the day, the heat and pressure is…
Sage Circa Fly Rod Review – Pride and Prejudice It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fly rod must be in want of a rising trout. When I first fished the Sage Circa; truthfully I will have to admit that I felt a little bit like Mr. Darcy when he…
Animas Lunch Report – 7/27/15 – Wanderlust Hikes to dry fly havens pretty much define late summer fly fishing. Photos from Andy’s weekend exploration into the Weminuche Wilderness. Brook, Rainbow, and Cutthroat trout were all found on dry flies. The wanderlust for the high country is strong in the shop these days. Click for a…
Animas Lunch Report – 7/24/15 – Dog Days Have we entered the dog days of summer? In theory, but it does not feel like it. Somewhat cooler temps and rain showers have made for a much more mild July. Oh well, no complaints from us; the fishing is good. The Animas is flowing at 802…
Animas Lunch Report – 7/23/15 – Good News We have a few bits of good news for ya! “As a result of decreasing river flows in the San Juan River Basin, the Bureau of Reclamation has scheduled an increase in the release from Navajo Reservoir from 350 cfs to 500 cfs on Thursday, July 23,…
Animas Lunch Report – 7/22/15 – Palomino A Palomino Trout (also known as a ‘Lightning’ Trout in California) is a pretty rare little gem here in Colorado. We don’t often see these guys, but when we do we make sure to remind them that they are rainbow trout with a genetic defect before we release them. We…

Soft Hackle Saturday: Peacock and Partridge Today’s installment of the Soft Hackle Saturday highlights the Peacock and Partridge. Also known as the Soft Hackle Peacock, this fly is wicked quick to tie and is a staple of the wet fly arsenal. All you need is some wet fly hooks (8-16), peacock, partridge, oval gold tinsel,…
Independents Week Independents Week 2015 came and went this past 4th of July week. I know, it’s spelled Independence; but here in La Plata county, our regional Local First also likes to celebrate something called Independents Week along with the Fourth of July. Independents Week is smaller on the scale of celebrations here in Durango. I…
Animas Lunch Report – 7/15/15 – Double Rainbow Oh what does it mean??? Hopefully that the river is going to clear up today. The Animas has been riding dirty for a few days, but it looks to be clearing. Rob managed a few good’uns on the Peacock Rubber Bugger yesterday… Kyle – The future is…
Animas Lunch Report – 7/13/15 – Monday Funday Ahh Monday Funday. Another day back to the weekly grind. Smash your desk, go fishing. The problems of Monday are already piling up and nothing seems to be going the way we want it too. All I am thinking about is the caddis hatch that is currently…
Animas Lunch Report – STOCKED Well…. we’re stocked And I don’t mean the shop (although we are stocked to the brim with any and all your fly fishing needs) As my associate Andy eluded to yesterday, the Animas has been stocked with very eager, dimly-colored and ultimately very fun “rainbows” grown in the hatchery. What does…
Animas Lunch Report – 7/10/15 – The Truck Well the truck is making it’s rounds today. What truck you might ask? Unfortunately, not the PBR truck. Nope, it’s the stocking truck. Yep, the Animas among other local rivers are getting an infusion of hofer rainbow trout. Are we excited about this? No comment. But you…
Animas Lunch Report – 7/9/15 – Mud Bugs So with yesterday’s Animas Lunch Report, we brought you bugs you should be looking out for these days with their corresponding artificials. But what if the river is looking like a total mud pit (like today when it shot up to 1800 cfs thanks to rain)? We…

Animas Lunch Report – 7/7/15 – Colorado Monsoon Season If you have been in Colorado for a few minutes now, you may have noticed the rain that turned on and off like a kitchen sink faucet. Our monsoon season has arrived. Traditionally starting around the 10th of July, the afternoon monsoons have been showing up…
What is Cyclepond Anyway? Cyclepond: it’s Fishpond’s commitment to re-purposing things no longer used. The short of it is that Fishpond is constantly looking for ways to reduce their footprint on the environment. How they went about it is quite ingenious. Cyclepond products are made from 40-100% nylon recycled commercial fishing nets, (an industry first). Here at…
Animas Lunch Report – 7/6/15 – It’s Time After long last, we can finally say that it’s time. It’s time to fish the Animas. While the water may be slightly high, it has been showing great clarity the past few days with consistent hatches of caddis. Expect to see fish on top in the evenings…but most…

No fish will be caught today. All week, the Animas seemed to be shaping up. With each day, slightly more clarity.…
